Radio Galaxy Zoo
Exploring the Cosmos: Radio Galaxy Zoo
Welcome to our journey through space! Today, we’re diving into a fascinating project called Radio Galaxy Zoo (RGZ). This unique initiative is all about harnessing the power of collective intelligence to unravel some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.
What is Radio Galaxy Zoo?
Radio Galaxy Zoo is an online, citizen science project hosted on Zooniverse, a platform that enables people worldwide to contribute to real scientific research. The goal of RGZ is to identify pairs of supermassive black holes and their associated jets in distant galaxies. By amassing a large number of classifications from volunteers like you, we aim to construct a comprehensive understanding of black holes at various stages and their origins.
The Journey So Far
Initiated by astronomer Ray Norris and his team in 2010, Radio Galaxy Zoo was born out of the need to cross-reference the millions of extragalactic radio sources that will be discovered by the upcoming Evolutionary Map of the Universe survey. Since its operations commenced on December 17, 2013, RGZ has been led by scientists Julie Banfield and Ivy Wong. Despite ceasing new classifications on May 1, 2019, the data collected continues to contribute significantly to our understanding of the cosmos.
Join the Adventure
We invite you to join us in this exciting exploration! By participating in Radio Galaxy Zoo, you become a part of a global community of citizen scientists, working together to uncover the secrets of the universe. Together, we can help build a more complete picture of black holes and their role in the cosmic dance.
